Research Design: Survey

Writing good survey items can be challenging. Aside from having experience in writing survey items, the best advice is to learn as much about other good survey items (and their authors) as you can. This set of sites can help you in that venture, as well as provide general information about the usefulness of surveys.

Associations and Societies
http://www.princeton.edu/~abelson/xsociety.html
Describes organizations dedicated or related to survey research.

Research Design: Correlational

Correlation does not equal causation. Just because two events are correlated does not mean that they are causally connected. For example, if school districts with high per-student funding do better than other districts on standardized achievement tests, it does not necessarily mean that a wealthy district causes increased achievement. It could be due to other factors. Still, correlation is very helpful in educational research because correlational studies identify which variables predict or explain educational outcomes. This set of sites explores the issue of correlational research.

Experimental Designs
http://www.socialresearchmethods.net/kb/destypes.htm

Choosing a Design
http://www.socialresearchmethods.net/kb/desdes.htm
Much contemporary social research is devoted to examining whether a program, treatment, or manipulation causes some outcome or result. This is no less true in educational research. This page shows you some things to think about as you design your study.

Quasi-Experimental Designs
